Initial Consultation

We will discuss what is going on, what kind of support you need and determine if I can assist you.

Assessment of Needs

I do assessments to inform my teaching and determine what kind of support a student needs.  Assessments tell me many things and are chosen based on the individual needs of the student. For example, assessments can inform me about a student's level of reading comprehension, which phoneme-grapheme correspondences are known and which spelling patterns need to be learned.  I develop an individual support plan based on the assessments. 

Reading Support--Decoding (learning how to read)

I provide basic support for individuals who are struggling to learn how to read.  This is for students of any age who are not fluent readers.  Fluency involves reading smoothly, accurately, with expression and at a reasonable speed.   

Reading Support--Reading Comprehension (begrijpend lezen)

Problems with reading comprehension can include issues with monitoring comprehension, inference skills or working memory; all of these are involved in reading comprehension.  It's necessary to determine the specific issue and build from there.

Spelling Support

I teach spelling patterns with a systematic, sequencial, cumulative  program.  I also teach tricky/irregular word spellings in English.

Writing Support

I help with planning/pre-writing skills, writing, revising and editing.

Writing takes practice; it doesn't come easily for many of us.
